MetaStock is one of the oldest technical analysis platforms in existence, operating since 1985. The Windows desktop application provides 400+ customizable chart options, 275+ built-in indicators, and expert advisors (pre-built analysis systems) for automated trade evaluation.
Powered by Refinitiv (London Stock Exchange Group) data, MetaStock covers stocks, forex, futures, and options globally. The Explorer scanning tool enables custom screening, the System Tester handles strategy backtesting, and the Forecaster provides price projection modeling.
The desktop-only requirement (Windows only) and additional data fees via Xenith make it more costly and less convenient than modern web-based alternatives. Trustpilot ratings are low (2.2-2.6/5) though expert reviewers rate it higher (~4.4/5), suggesting it serves power users well but frustrates casual users.

What data does MetaStock use?›
MetaStock has been around since 1985 for good reason. The depth of technical analysis tools is unmatched. Over 300 built-in indicators, system testing, expert advisors — it's all there. The learning curve is steep but if you're serious about TA this is a professional-grade platform.
MetaStock is incredibly powerful for backtesting and technical analysis. The Xenith data feed is comprehensive. However, the interface feels dated compared to modern platforms and the pricing model with separate data subscriptions adds up quickly. Still the best for serious quantitative TA work.
Been using MetaStock for over two years now. The system testing capabilities and custom indicator building are best in class. The forecasting tools using neural networks are a nice modern addition. Just be prepared to invest both time learning it and money for the data subscriptions.
If your trading approach is heavily technical analysis driven, MetaStock remains the most comprehensive option available. The Explorer feature for scanning stocks across custom criteria is incredibly powerful. Customer support has also been excellent in my experience. Worth the investment for professionals.
